My daughter is 14 months old, and is very good at eating with a spoon and a fork. We started giving her her own spoon around 10 months old, and she is so strong-willed, she insisted on feeding herself. So, we let her try and try (and gave her foods that stick well to a spoon like yogurt), and by 12 months, she had mastered it. She even ate her first birthday cupcake with a fork! But kids are all different, and I would say she is probably the exception rather than the rule on this subject.
