How Old Are Children/toddlers (generally) Went They First Attempt/master Eating On Their Own With Cutlery?

My daughter is 14 months old, and is very good at eating with a spoon and a fork. We started giving her her own spoon around 10 months old, and she is so strong-willed, she insisted on feeding herself. So, we let her try and try (and gave her foods that stick well to a spoon like yogurt), and by 12 months, she had mastered it. She even ate her first birthday cupcake with a fork! But kids are all different, and I would say she is probably the exception rather than the rule on this subject.

It sounds like she’s starting that stage of being fussy about any old thing now that she knows she can tell you “no”.
She most likely understands the concept, but is unwilling to try it just yet. I know some kids who won’t do anything until they know for sure they can do it right. My friend’s daughter would practice everything when she was alone (saying certain words or playing patty-cake and such), but would not do these things in front of her parents until she was ready. Could this be the case?
Anyway, just keep filling the spoon up for her and try every once in a while to have her “help” you with getting it to her mouth.
My girl is 20 months old, and has tried here and there to self feed when she is prompted to. That is: I would spear something onto her fork and hand her the fork, after which she can get it right into her mouth. After a few months of trying to show her how to use a spoon I find that she is willing to try to scoop the food and feed it to herself as a novelty, but not tipping the spoon is just impossible. I wish they made toddler cutlery with longer handles so you could assist them without totally taking over the feeding thing.

my son is 2 and we have been working with him on using a spoon and fork since he was about 18 mos. He will use a spoon but only upside down so it only works for ice cream, pudding and other liquidy things. A fork he will use if you spear the food for him but if left to his own devices he will hold it by the tines and use the handle end, or he will hold the fork in one hand and pick up the food with the other and try to stick it on the tines. Right now I am not really pushing the whole silverware issue because he eats great with or without them so I will keep making them available and showing him how occasionally but I don’t expect him to master it until he is closer to three.

My son is almost 2 1/2 yrs old and he does very well with a fork and spoon. He started using it himself around 12-14 months (showing real interest) but wasn’t good at it. He got better around 18 months but made a serious mess, he’d spill half on the way to his mouth.
So I say from 2-2 1/2 yrs old is when he really started doing well. With much less of a mess :)

My daughter is 23 months old and can use a fork pretty well (though she prefers her hands..). The spoon is a different story..She does OK for her age, but not really well.
    Be patient
